Denture Care

Complete dentures replace missing teeth from periodontal disease, tooth decay, or injury. A denture helps support facial muscles, as well as allows the patients to eat and speak regularly.

Handling Them

Dentures are very delicate. Even the shortest fall could cause them to break. To help prevent breaks, always handle them over a folded towel or water basin. Also, store them in a place that is out of reach of both children and pets.

Just Like Brushing Teeth

Like natural, dentures must be brushed daily to get rid of food deposits and plaque build-up. Select a toothbrush that is made especially for dentures, or use a regular toothbrush with soft bristles. Avoid using a brush with hard bristles because this can actually damage your dentures. Brush all surfaces of the dentures, scrubbing gently.

A hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid can be used as a denture cleaner. However, you want to avoid using any powdered household cleaners which may be too abrasive and damage the dentures.

Storage

When dentures are allowed to dry out they can actually change shape. Keep them stored in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water when they are not being worn. Never put them in hot water because this could cause them to warp.
