At DuPage Dental Smiles, Dr. Sumeet Bagai and his staff are dedicated to offering a full range of West Chicago dental care, including the treatment of dental emergencies.
Don’t Ignore Dental Emergencies
When an unexpected dental problem occurs, you may be tempted to dismiss it as nothing serious, thinking that if you treat it with OTC medication it will take care of itself and go away.
While this approach may work for a few very minor dental problems, it will by no means work for all. Persistent pain, for example, is quite possibly a symptom of a serious dental issue requiring professional care.
When you’re experiencing a dental emergency and reach out to our clinic, our staff will do everything possible to schedule an emergency dental appointment for you. At your appointment, Dr. Bagai will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth – possibly with the use of x-rays – to determine the cause of your dental problem.
Once Dr. Bagai has a clear picture of your dental situation, he can develop a treatment plan to deal with the issue and allow you to return to your normal daily routine as quickly as possible.
Common Dental Emergencies
The following are some of the more common dental problems requiring emergency care, along with temporary treatment steps you may take before coming to our office.
- Toothache – Many toothaches are not really an emergency. However, if the pain lasts more than 24 hours or if you have signs of an infection, like fever, swelling or fatigue, you probably need emergency dental care. To deal with the situation before seeing Dr. Bagai, you should carefully remove any food particles that might be lodged in the affected area. Then, clean with warm water, and apply an ice pack to the cheek to reduce swelling.
- Missing tooth – If you have a knocked out tooth, time is extremely important to avoid tooth loss. Rinse the tooth gently and try to replace it in the socket or place it between the cheek and gum. Or you might place it in a container of water or milk. The object is to keep the tooth moist until you can get to our dental clinic. If the tooth is only partially dislodged, don’t touch it. Instead, apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth and contact our office immediately.
- Cracked or broken tooth – Cracked or broken teeth should be treated as soon as possible to avoid an infection or further damage. After contacting our office, rinse your mouth with water, and if there are any shards or pieces, bring them with you for emergency treatment.
- Lost crown or filling – You might temporarily cover the opening using OTC dental cement or some sugarless gum. In the case of a crown that has come off, do not try to replace it using glue or any other substance not approved for oral treatment.
- Object caught between the teeth – Try removing the object using floss or a water pic. If unsuccessful, call us to arrange an emergency appointment.
- Broken denture – A broken denture is a dental emergency that should be treated as soon as possible. Do not reinsert a broken denture in your mouth as it may damage your gums and other teeth. Instead, call us immediately to schedule an appointment for emergency dentistry with Dr. Bagai.
- Soft tissue injuries – These would include injuries to the gums, cheeks, or lips. You might use a mild, saltwater solution to rinse your mouth and contact DuPage Dental Smiles for treatment.
